MoBay barber sentenced and fined
Western Bureau: Montego Bay barber Maurice Gabbadon, who last month excreted almost four pounds of cocaine, was this week sentenced to eight months behind bars and fined $180,000 for breaches of the Dangerous Drugs Act.
The ruling was handed down in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrate’s Court.
The 22 year-old man was stopped at the Sangster International airport in the city on May 9 and later excreted 3.99 ounces of cocaine at the Cornwall Regional Hospital.
He was charged with possession of, dealing in and attempting to export the illegal substance.
In court Wednesday Gabbadon pleaded guilty to the charges against him and asked RM Valerie Stephens to grant him leniency.
For possession of the substance he was fined $40,000 or six months. For dealing in it he was fined $60,000 or six months. And for attempting to export it he was fined $80,000 or six months and sentenced to eight months at hard labour.
Meanwhile 21 year-old Clarendon resident, Stefan Reid, was fined $80,000 and sentenced to four months at hard labour for a similar offence.
He excreted 1.79 ounces of cocaine after he was stopped at the Montego Bay airport earlier this month.
For possession of the drug he was fined $20,000 or six months. For dealing in it he was fined $30,000 or six months, and for attempting to export it he was fined another $30,000 or six months. He was also given an additional four months at hard labour.
