Still no place for Whitehouse dead
DESPITE two years of consistent pleading for lands belonging to the state-owned Urban Development Corporation (UDC) to be handed over to the Westmoreland Parish Council to be used as a cemetery, area residents are still without a place to bury their dead.
According to councillor of the Leamington division and mayor of Savanna-la-Mar, Ralph Anglin, talks between the council and the UDC are nowhere near completion.
“The council is still waiting on UDC to make a decision on the site,” Anglin said.
A survey was commissioned on the Mount Edgecombe property in Whitehouse, part of which has long been designated for a cemetery. But the price of the lot has been the sticking point in the discussions.
The UDC was willing to sell the proposed cemetery site for $1 million a price which many thought was more than reasonable.
