THE Bustamante Industrial Trade Union (BITU) has requested a meeting between the Government, Banana Producers and the other trades unions representing banana workers at Victoria Banana in Clarendon, to discuss the closure of the plant and the job loses.

BITU vice president, Pearnel Charles, in a statement yesterday, said a contact at Banana Producers indicated that the company was open to suggestions from the government and the unions of possible ways to continue the production of bananas in Clarendon.

Charles said it would be difficult for 300 workers to accept the closure of the plant at this time and urged the Government to intervene with the view of finding a solution to the problem that the company is experiencing.

“The workers and their union are willing to co-operate in working out an acceptable solution to the problem,” said Charles.

The unions, Charles said, would be making suggestions to the government concerning the closure of the banana plant.
