Credit union gives $1.5 million for scholarships, bursaries
THE UWI (Mona) & Community Co-op Credit Union Limited recently donated $1.5 million to provide scholarships, bursaries and financial assistance to needy students, including children of its members as well as students of the University of the West Indies and the University of Technology (UTech).
The lion share – $750,000 – was allocated for bursaries to 40 students who were successful in the recent Grade Six Achievement Test (GSAT), and whose parents are members of the credit union.
The Principal’s Scholarship Fund at the University of the West Indies and the University of Technology Needy Students Fund received $300,000 and $200,000 respectively.
And $150,000 was earmarked for the Ezra Lewis Scholarship, which is offered annually to members, their spouses or children attending the UWI, UTech or other accredited tertiary institutions.
