G2K says thanks to young voters
GENERATION 2000 (G2K), the young professional affiliate of the Jamaica Labour Party, says the large turnout of young voters was largely responsible for the party’s victory in Monday’s general elections.
However, while thanking the young voters for their support, G2K president, Warren Newby, said the organisation is concerned about the high number of young people who did not vote.
He said G2K was reassessing the situation in order to formulate new strategies to attract the youth population, adding that he was cognisant of the fact that a significant proportion of the population and more so young persons between the ages of 18 and 35 are apathetic towards Jamaica’s political system.
“The new Bruce Golding-led Jamaica Labour Party administration and G2K will work diligently at restoring faith in our political system and also to once and for all break down the walls of political tribalism,” Newby said in a statement yesterday.
He said that those who did not vote because of a lack of faith or apathy in the country’s political system had enamoured G2K to work even harder at bringing about real change in Jamaica’s political system.
Newby said the JLP’s proposals for substantive constitutional reform would be fast-tracked in the interest of providing good governance for the people of Jamaica.
