Suspect in prep school shooting in custody
MONTEGO BAY, St James – Investigators were yesterday awaiting the result of a ballistic examination to determine whether a suspect they have in custody is one of the two who were involved in Wednesday morning’s brazen gun slaying of Leo Harris, a 45-year-old electrical engineer of Moy Hall, St James, at one of the city’s prestigious preparatory schools.
The suspect, who was suffering from gunshot wounds, was nabbed when he turned up for treatment at the Cornwall Regional Hospital on Wednesday night.
“We have a man in custody that turned up at the hospital last night (Wednesday night) with gunshot wounds. We have him as a suspect,” head of the St James Police Division, Superintendent Steve McGregor told the Observer Thursday.
Harris, accompanied by his wife, was about to drop off his daughter at the Montego Bay Preparatory School when he was pounced upon by two gunmen who opened fire, hitting him several times. After the shooting the armed men sped off in a white Toyota Corolla motor car in the direction of the Mango Walk community.
The police believe the suspect may have been shot by a licensed firearm holder, who had just left his child at school.
The cops are anticipating that ballistic examination will prove conclusively if a bullet removed from the body of the man in custody can be traced to the gun of the legal firearm holder who “took on the gunmen”.
Meanwhile, the police said during an operation Thursday afternoon they confiscated the motor vehicle in which the armed men reportedly used to escape from Wednesday morning’s crime scene.
The lawmen have subsequently released the occupants who were aboard the vehicle, after questioning.
