Harbour Street Craft Market to be refurbished in January
MONTEGO BAY, St James –
Work on the Harbour Street Craft Market which is badly in need of refurbishing will start in January, according to Winston Mckain, Product Quality Manager at the Tourism Product Development Company (TPDCo).
The development which was announced last Friday at a press conference convened by the newly-formed Jamaica Craft Traders and Producers Association, will bring relief to some 300 users of the facility which, according to president Melody Haughton has for years been the victim of pimps and thugs.
Haughton is also the president of the newly-formed association which replaces the now defunct National Craft Vendors Association.
Haughton along with vice-president Devon Mitchell used last week’s opportunity to outline the new association’s objectives.
Chief among them she said would be the need to see to the education and training of the vendors in order to being line with the contemporary demands of the industry.
A much more vociferous Mitchell hit out against what many of the vendors described as the cut-throat tactics being employed against them on an unlevel playing field.
He said that ideally, the government should step in to provide some level of protection so that craft vendors could better compete in the marketplace.
