AT least two more Jamaicans lost their lives over the holiday weekend, bringing the total to three.

Several hours after popular dancehall figure, Ice (born David Alexander Smith) was gunned down in a bar on Newark Avenue, off Waltham Park Road in Kingston early Friday morning, two gunmen were shot and killed by police at the intersection of St George’s and Wareika Roads.

The dead men have been identified as 23-year-old Kenrick Jacks, a fisherman of Windward Road, and Venroy McDermott, 18, of Hypolite Road in Rockfort.

According to the Constabulary Communication Network (CCN), a joint police-military party was on patrol in the Rockfort area at about 10:10 pm, when upon entering Wareika Road, the lawmen observed two men coming out of a gully acting suspiciously. When accosted, one of the men reportedly pulled a firearm and aimed it at the police party. The officers opened fire hitting them. The police say they seized a .45 Colt pistol with a magazine containing seven rounds. The injured men were taken to hospital where they were pronounced dead. The Bureau of Special Investigations (BSI) is said to be investigating the incident.

Meanwhile, over in St Catherine, the Portmore CIB is investigating the case involving two teenagers who were allegedly shot and injured by a policeman as they reportedly attempted to rob a group of people in the Palmetto East area.

The youths (16 and 17 years), both of Westchester, Portmore are now hospitalised under police guard.

According to the CCN, at about 11:00 pm, the policeman was among a group of persons at a premises in Palmetto East when they were pounced upon by three young men, all armed with handguns. They were challenged by the lawman and a shoot-out ensued during which two of the three hoodlums were shot and injured. Their crony escaped in the area. A .38 Ruger revolver with five rounds of ammunition was reportedly taken from one of them. The two injured youngsters were taken to hospital where they were admitted under police guard.

In the meantime, the Major Investigation Task Force (MIT) continues to probe Smith’s murder. Speaking with the Sunday Observer yesterday, a CCN spokesperson said the investigators have still not determined a motive for the murder and are asking eyewitnesses to come forward.

Smith, 36, a member of the Black Roses Crew based on Lincoln Road in Kingston, was shot in the head and other parts of his upper body by attackers who escaped in his rented Mitsubishi Lancer motor vehicle. He is credited with crafting the popular ‘Gully Creepa’ dance performed by Olympian Usain Bolt at the Beijing Games.
