A man who allegedly drove off after hitting down a six-year-old boy in Retirement, St James last September was remanded in police custody on appearing in the Montego Bay Resident Magistrates Court yesterday.

Carlington Rowe who is facing several charges including manslaughter was held in Ocho Rios recently after being picked up by the police along with several other persons at a dance.

Three warrants had been issued for Rowe’s arrest, the court, was told but he had fled the area and was living elsewhere.

The court also heard that an uncooperatove Rowe was refusing to tell the police the whereabouts of the vehicle he had been driving on the day in question.

The court heard that the deceased, six-year-old Jevaughn Sutherland, had been sent to a nearby shop by his father on September 19th at about 5:30 pm.

It was heard that five minutes later the elder Sutherland heard sounds of a vehicle engine at high speed and sounds of brakes screeching. When he went to look he saw a car swerving on the wet road.

Eye-witnesses allegedly saw the driver, of the vehicle who was previously known to Sutherland swerve to the left and hit the boy several feet off the pavement.

The court heard that as Sutherland shouted “You kill me pickney,” the car slowed down, regained speed and left the area.

The child was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A report was made and a warrant issued for Rowe.

Rowe will be taken back to court on April 1 by which time he is expected to have retained an attorney.
