THE intricacies of graphic design takes a man of much patience and creativity in order to stand above the rest who make claim to the skill. Twenty-four-year-old Rogen Walker exemplifies these traits, being well reputed among his peers as an artist — graphic artist, that is. Ruption, as he is more popularly known, is a young entrepreneur whose focus and drive has been leading him along the right path towards success in his field.

TEENage sat down with this Calabar old-boy to get a behind-the-talent exclusive with Ruption. Here’s what this charismatic young man shared with us.

TEENage: What do you do?

Ruption: I am a graphic designer. I also do video editing and write songs.

TEENage: How did you acquire this skill?

Ruption: I’m mostly self-taught, but I went to the Media and Technology Institute for some formal education for one year.

TEENage: When did you decide to take this skill beyond a hobby and into a career?

Ruption: It was never a hobby. I had a passion for the arts and always wanted to pursue it.

TEENage: What inspired you to start Ruption Design Studio and how long have you been doing it?

Ruption: Ever since I’ve been attending Calabar (High School), I’ve been editing and designing. I started working for Dunlop Corbin Communications, which is one of the best advertising agencies in Jamaica. I learnt a lot from the graphics department there.

TEENage: Who have you worked with, in terms of major projects or events?

Ruption: Red Label Wine, Claro, Burger King, ATL, Flow and several reputed promoters like those from parties like South Beach, Barcode, 11:59 and Karma.

TEENage: What do you have working on for the upcoming festive season?

Ruption: Right now, I’m working with Red Label Wine and Burger King, as well as video editing for upcoming artistes Lil Joe and Kray-Z’s new videos.

TEENage: What are your plans for Ruption Design Studio in terms of expansion?

Ruption: I’m thinking about directing and producing music videos and doing more songwriting as well.

TEENage: Where do you see Ruption Design Studio in five years?

Ruption: The sky is the limit, it seems to be growing on its own without me setting a certain path for it. I am still in the learning process stage. But in five years, I want to look back and see that I have progressed.

TEENage: What do you consider to be the most challenging task that you have had to work on so far?

Ruption: When I had to work for a German company who wanted me to make a design for them, with their language; the language barrier was very difficult to get around.

Ruption: Either thinking about designing or playing football.

TEENage: How do you balance your social life, family and work?

Ruption: Working is fun for me and with being single, I have a lot of time to attend to work.

TEENage: What advice do you have for other TEENs who want to start a graphic designing?

Ruption: You have to have a passion for it. It’s not a job, it’s not something to study for, it takes a lot of creative energy. Just remember practice makes perfect.
