Campbell the toast at US college
FORMER Cornwall College and National Youth player Edward Campbell was recently named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Junior College Division One Player of the Year in a ceremony held in Philadelphia, USA.
Campbell, who attended San Jacinto College-South in Houston, Texas, represented Cornwall in the daCosta Cup for four seasons before taking up a scholarship in Texas two years ago.
This past season, his second, he tallied 18 points, scoring six goals and six assists while leading the team in goals scored.
This was an improvement on his first season where he scored five goals and had five assists playing in midfield.
Campbell scored the team’s only goal in the Region XIV championship game against Tyler Junior College and closed his career with 11 goals and 11 assists.
The two-time team Most Valuable Player also won a number of other awards, including selections on the National Junior College Athletic Association All-region team, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-region first team and the NSCAA All-American first team.
Dr David Santesteban, the head coach and athletics director at San Jacinto-South, is quoted on the school’s website as saying, “I always believe that individual honours are a tribute to the entire team.
“I’m very proud of Edward, and I think that he can accomplish great things in his future, the most important of which will be to complete his education. He has several schools offering him the chance to do that, and I’m confident that we will continue to see his name in the sports headlines.”
After completing his two years at San Jacinto, Campbell — who also represented Seba United and was a member of the Jamaican Under-20 team, which won a silver medal at the Pan American Games in 2007 — is currently considering offers from a number of top colleges in the United States.
