Minister’s grandson, girlfriend cause security scare at UWI
THE 17-year-old grandson of Security Minister Dwight Nelson and his girlfriend, who were allegedly involved in a domestic dispute, caused a major security scare at the University of the West Indies’ Mona campus yesterday.
Police said they got a report that a woman was being shoved into a car and prepared themselves to tackle a case of abduction.
Head of the St Andrew Central Division Superintendent Derrick Knight said all gates at the university were sealed in order to prevent the car from leaving.
Police from the Organised Crime Investigative Division, which deals with kidnappings, were also called in.
“…Somebody saw and reported that she was shoved into the trunk of car, so we prepared ourselves for an abduction. The car was found six minutes later in the parking lot,” Knight told the Observer last night.
Knight said after the couple was interrogated it was revealed that the male in the car was the security minister’s grandson and that he had a domestic dispute with his girlfriend.
“We did not know who it was. The girl saw him talking to another girl and she got jealous. He then shoved her in the car,” Knight said.
“No charges were proffered as the girl said she did not want to press any charges. The parents got involved and the matter was settled amicably,” Knight said.
The female was said to be a pre-university student.
The incident comes just days after a female student of the institution was kidnapped at her gate in St Andrew.
Police said that young woman was among a group of relatives who had gone to run an errand and were held up and robbed by two gunmen on their return home.
The gunmen, the police reported, forced the woman into a car and sped off.
A ransom demand was made, via telephone, and after intense negotiations money was handed over and the young woman released unharmed in the Red Hills community of St Andrew.
Police investigators say they have identified four suspects in that incident.
