W’house face H’View in crucial game
LEADERS Harbour View and third-placed Waterhouse will be showing no love on Valentine’s Day when they meet in a crucial Digicel Premier League game at Drewsland at 6:00 pm.
In other games, Arnett Gardens host Tivoli Gardens; Portmore United travel to Boys’ Town; Village United tackle Rivoli United; Sporting Central face Humble Lions and August Town tackle St George’s.
Harbour View (48 points) have the psychological edge over a Waterhouse team — lying seven behind — that they defeated in the second End-of-Round Final.
Waterhouse, who had the most impressive second round, have not won in their last three outings and cannot afford to lose to Harbour View if they intend to win the league.
Defeat would put them 10 points adrift of the leaders, who have a game in hand and could stretch that to a possible 13 points.
With that in mind, this is a huge game for Waterhouse, who will be seeking to rebound from their 0-3 defeat last Wednesday.
Defending champions Tivoli, trailing Harbour View by three points and on 45 points, face their fiercest foe in a wounded and dangerous Arnett Gardens, lying at the bottom on 24 points.
Again, there will no love lost in what is expected to be a bruising battle. Twenty-one points separate the teams, but that will have no bearing on these longtime rivals.
Tivoli won the first match 2-1 and drew the second 1-1; Arnett will be hell-bent on leveling the series.
Tivoli will welcome back national players Keammar Daley and Navion Boyd to bolsters their squad, and that could prove decisive.
Arnett will be looking towards the towering Newton Sterling and Leon Strickland in attack, but what could also be critical is who coach Wayne Fairclough starts in midfield to neutralise the combative duo of Jerry Walters and Steve Green.
Meanwhile former champion Portmore have slumped into the relegation zone with 24 points and confidence should be at an all-time low when they meet fourth-placed Boys’ Town (38 points).
Portmore have not won in their last nine games dating back to November 29 when they beat today’s rivals 1-0, and will be hoping for a repeat performance to start their revival.
Eighth-placed Village (26), fresh from their impressive 3-0 demolition of Waterhouse in mid-week, face sixth-placed Rivoli (29) who are trying to hold onto that final top berth.
The Clarendon derby between seventh spot Sporting (29) and Humble Lions who are three points behind, should also be an intriguing affair.
The promoted Humble Lions have strengthened enough in the January transfer window and can hold their own against any of the teams, while Sporting has a nice blend of experience and youth which sets the stage for an intriguing encounter at Brancourt.
Fifth-placed St George’s (37) and 10th-placed August Town (25) meet in a match pitting inspirational midfielder Daniel Shaw against his former team.
