THE race for the Claro/KSAFA Major League title will go down to the wire following yesterday’s top-of-the-table drawn result between UWI and Central Kingston at the UWI Bowl.

Ricardo Rowe’s fourth-minute strike gave Central Kingston an early lead, but Andrae Bernal levelled for the hosts just on the half-hour mark.

The result left UWI atop the standings with 42 points, one more than Central Kingston. However, the draw swung the race back into fourth-placed Rockfort’s favour as they are three points off the lead with a game in hand, following the postponement of their game against Greenwich Town.

In other matches, Police defeated Liguanea 2-0 to move into third; Cooreville edged Molynes 1-0; Olympic beat Swallowfield 1-0, while the game between Whitfield and Brown’s Town ended 1-1.

In next Saturday’s final round, UWI play away to Brown’s Town, Central Kingston host Greenwich Town, Rockfort take on Molynes, while Police entertain Whitfield.

Rockfort will play Greenwich Town in their rescheduled game on Tuesday at Tinson Pen.

Central Kingston, Rockfort and Police were 3-0, 2-1 and 4-0 winners against the said teams in the first round and should fancy their chances next Saturday.

However, UWI lost 2-3 to Brown’s Town after leading 2-0 with three minutes to go. And their coach Neville ‘Bertis’ Bell remembers that game all too well and will go into the next fixture knowing only a win will gaurantee the title.

‘I thought from the first half we had a number of chances and late in the game we got the winner, but that’s football,” Bell reasoned.

His counterpart Vincent Watson said although they lost their grip at the top, he is confident once they win next Saturday, the title will be theirs.

“We’re not disappointed; we still have a round to go, so hopefully, we can get the three points to claim this victory,” he stated.

At the UWI Bowl, after Bernal cancelled Rowe’s strike, the home team still had a number of opportunities to take the points.

Oneil Fairweather did find the back of the net minutes after the interval, but he was called for offside, while in time added, Bernal squandered a glorious chance to clinch the match after he was left unmarked inside the area.

At Jamaica College, Police National stopped Liguanea through goals from Marlon Swaby and Damion Virgo to move to third with 40 points and give themselves a shot at the title entering the final round.
