Caribbean Strikers, Claremont make INSPORTS All-Island football final
Kingston’s Caribbean Strikers will meet Claremont of Hanover in the April 10 final of the INSPORTS All-Island Community Football Championship, after semi-final victories on Sunday.
Caribbean Strikers took full advantage of the wounded Winchester side, blanking the St Thomas outfit 3-0 at the Constant Spring Complex.
However, Claremont had to battle hard as they prevailed 1-0 over Manchester’s New Green at Kaiser, St Ann. Striker Rohan Wallace got the goal in the 28th minute.
There was plenty drama in the capital city as both side placed their undefeated record on the line.
But with less than 10 minutes into the match the game took a dramatic twist when Winchester lost first string goalkeeper Oneil Gunter and key central defender Vassell Noilely.
Communication was lost between the teammates as they simultaneously went to clear the ball and collided. Both sustained injuries and were substituted.
Their loss was immediately felt and on 22 minutes Winchester’s defence was breached by Caribbean Strikers’ hitman Dwayne Gordon, who finished coolly after receiving a long diagonal pass from Evan Brown.
They were given a chance to draw level from the penalty spot, but Douglas Bignal’s effort was saved by Horace Fairclough of Caribbean Strikers.
Winchester seemed to have shaken off the unfortunate mishap in the first half and on the resumption played with a greater sense of purpose.
But they were further set back on 71 minutes when Raymond Tulloch’s angled shot found the far corner of the goal.
Winchester continued to search for a way back into the game, but again the were hurt on the counter, this time in stoppage period, as substitute Tyson Tulloch poked home from close range.
It was a deserved victory nonetheless for the Kingstonians, who will now shift their focus on pocketing the $500,000 prize money in two weeks’ time.
