$2m for backgammon tourney winners
AT this year’s Annual Strawberry Hill High Stakes Backgammon Tournament set to take place this weekend, 22 competitors will battle it out for nearly Jamaican $2 million in cash & prizes. Reigning champion Alastair MacBeath is back to defend the title he won last year and battle it out with Jamaica’s other top players. This year is the fifth staging of the tournament and it is sure to deliver drama, suspense and excitement.
The activities began yesterday with players warming up with the ritual pre-Game day tournament for which the winner will take home the Dickie Jobson Memorial Trophy.
The official tournament competition starts 10:00 am sharp today with preliminary rounds played throughout the day finishing at approximately 6:00 pm.
Knock-out stage of the tournament resumes tomorrow with final rounds due to continue throughout the day with the final heats taking place between 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm. The event culminates with a gala prize-giving ceremony on the main lawns of Strawberry Hill in St Andrew at 4:30 pm.
