IT is with a sense of pride and gratification that we note the changing face of the Hip Strip, which now includes a modern recreational park at the Old Hospital Site, which has been established for the recreational comfort of citizens and visitors here in the Tourist Capital.

The $30M project, funded by the Tourism Enhancement Fund (TEF) on lands belonging to the Urban Development Corporation (UDC), had long been the subject of many debates and had met with many snags along the way.

However, like myself, Montegonians who have waited much too long for this facility are extremely excited and overjoyed that the facility is now materialising and are looking forward to its ‘Opening’. At that time we will be able to enjoy the convenience of the Park which boasts a walking trail, information kiosk, and picnic areas, amongst its other well defined features.

Despite the varying oppositions and arguments presented against the development of this area as a green space, we are thankful that through the persistent efforts of the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the other Stakeholders who lobbied the cause, better sense has prevailed and today we are now anticipating a project that will definitely add value to the city.

The citizenry of Montego Bay now finally has a place where they can enjoy the ambience, tranquility and comfort of our most treasured “green space’ in the western end of the island. For years, we have grudgingly watched the citizens of other urban centres overseas and even those in our Capital City, enjoy the ‘luxury’ of this type of facility, regrettably, this has been missing from our community, we therefore welcome this addition with much delight and satisfaction.

Our city planners of the past seem to have had scant regard for the development of green spaces in the city, however, we are pleased to see the commencement of this type of recreational facility and trust that this is the start of many more such projects for western Jamaica, as this could enhance the social fabric of our country.

It is also very critical that as a resort destination we have designated areas where our visitors get an opportunity to mingle with our locals and experience our true Jamaican culture. One of the highlights in visiting a country is the opportunity to interface with the locals to effect cultural exchanges. As there is always the sun, sea and sand at many other competing destinations, having these facilities can only serve to enhance our product.

Again kudos to the Montego Bay Chamber of Commerce, the UDC and the TEF for their effort in helping to bring this project to fruition.
