Samuels sweeps National Road Championships
ATLANTA-BASED Oneil Samuels, a son of Portland, romped home with the two-day National Road Cycling Championships crown on the weekend, enriched by the breaking of a 20-year course record.
Preparing for the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Games in Puerto Rico in two weeks, Samuels topped both the 130km road race from Ocho Rios to Falmouth and back; and the 40km time trial in Port Royal. He was also crowned the overall Elite Road Champion 2010.
“Three birds with one stone,” Samuels quipped, after walking away with three trophies.
In the Elite competition, Samuels clocked three hours 32 seconds to clinch the Ocho Rios to Falmouth to Ocho Rios route, edging out Marloe Rodman and Lainel Stewart on the line on Sunday. The route involved six agonising climbs.
Richard Bowen of Team Fresh Vibes completed the journey in three hours 55 seconds to take the Masters, ahead of teammate Devon ‘Buck Buck’ Beckford, and Wayne Smith of Montego Bay.
Racing on the professional circuit for Ionsports Nutrition, Samuels showed superb form in Port Royal time trial to break the 20-year course record of 53 minutes 40 seconds set by Xavier Miranda.
Samuels clocked 53 minutes 6 seconds to eclipse Tinga Turner, 53:20, with Leighton Anderson of Montego Bay third in 57 minutes, 2 seconds.
Bowen also won the Masters in the time trial, clocking 58 minutes 35 seconds, with Carlton Simmonds placing second in a time of 61 minutes 8 seconds, while Smith was third in 63 minutes 7 seconds.
Tyler Hill of Nautilus, Portland won the 16km junior race timing 27 minutes, beating Shaquille Sinclair (27 minutes 8 seconds) of Endurance, Portmore and Oshane Williams (27:57) of Cornwall, Montego Bay.
Over 30 cyclists took part in the two-day event.
The Junior Road Championships will roll off on Sunday, from Annotto Bay to Ocho Rios.
