Hunt Memorial Classic set for tomorrow
THE second renewal of the David ‘Wagga” Hunt Memorial Football Classic is scheduled for Saturday, August 7, 2010 with three games at the UWI Mona Bowl, tentatively set to begin at 2:00 pm.
The fundraising event will kick off with the Meadhaven Senior Team tackling Real Mona Senior Team before Meadhaven Masters playing Pelicans FC at 3:30 pm with the feature encounter between Kingston College and Calabar Manning Cup teams at 5:00 pm.
Chairman of the organising committee Arnold McDonald said the event is part of a bigger iniative in honour of Hunt.
“We recognise Hunt and will give a scholarship to two students from Kingston College and Calabar. All the proceeds will go towards that iniative,” McDonald told the Observer yesterday.
Hunt, a former KC student who coached Calabar to the 2005 Manning Cup title and the National Under-17 team, died in October 2007 of an apparent heart attack.
In his honour, which started last year, two students from KC and Calabar gained scholarships which covers Grade Eight to Grade 13, to the tune of $600,000.
“This year we will present scholarships to two more Grade Eight students, thus having four David Hunt Scholars for the Academic Year 2010 to 2011,” McDonald pointed out.
“Proceeds from this year’s Classic, along with the expected additional sponsorship contributions, will go towards making it possible for us to continue to help these students each year, while honouring David Hunt’s name and the principles that guided his life,” he added.
Hunt, a KC Old Boy, had a passion for football. He dedicated his life to the sport and was deeply committed to his players’ well-being, both on and off the field.
He was one of Jamaica’s foremost track and field analysts and co-founder of Meadhaven Football Club.
The David “Wagga” Hunt Classic and the related Scholarship Programme are organised by members of his family and a committee of friends and colleagues.
