Ex sugar workers protest
A group of laid-off sugar workers this morning staged a protest outside the Bernard Lodge Transformation Village in St Catherine, demanding money they said is owed them.Observer tried unsuccessfully to get a comment from representatives at the company.Observer after returning from the main office.
According to the workers, the company has been dragging its feet in turning over funds granted to them by the European Union (EU), through the agriculture ministry.
“The people them know that they were going to redundant we and they [EU] sent the little money to give us back a start in life; and all now we can’t get it,” said Rayon Lucas.
“Wi get lay-off from last year and every time we come back for the little money they tell us a hundred things that we need to do. Is like they are taking us around in circles for our money,” he continued.
Lucas said the group was among more than a hundred persons sent home from the company, and that they were told each man would receive $150,000, while women would get $175,000.
