Gov’t denies muzzling SLB head
THE Government is denying claims by opposition spokesman on education Basil Waite, that yesterday’s sacking of executive director of the Students Loan Bureau, Lenice Barnett, was not an attempt to muzzle her.‘Gov’t muzzled Student Loan head’ – PNPStudents’ Loan Bureau boss sacked
Minutes after news broke that Barnett had been booted yesterday, Waite launched a scathing attack on the Government claiming that the move was an attempt to ‘sanitise’ the bureau with the intention of hiking rates.
Two weeks ago Barnett ruffled Government’s feathers when she announced that tertiary level students may be faced with heavy tuition increases.
But junior finance minister, Arthur Williams, brushed off Waite’s allegations.
Williams said the findings of an audit had influenced finance minister Audley Shaw to terminate Barnett’s contract yesterday.
Shaw is expected to meet with the remaining members of the bureau’s board of directors this morning.
