Keep writing, Jean
Dear Editor,
I always try to read Jean Lowrie-Chin’s articles in the Observer. I notice that people tend to beat her down sometimes but she has persisted with her work. I like that.
It’s strange, but many of the naysayers about Jamaica are actually Jamaicans. I live in the US and have heard Jamaicans decrying almost everything about their own country. I always correct them.
Further checks, though, reveal that many of them do not really know Jamaica. They did not experience most of the things the country had to offer and as such are not very good ambassadors.
It is so different when you are in a position to compare various societies. I am not one who craves the front pages or any mention, for that matter, but some of us keep telling the real Jamaican story to both Jamaicans and non-Jamaicans living overseas. I have recommended the island to many visitors who usually want to return, and they always ask why I did not remain in Jamaica. Jamaica is a class act and it is sad that so many goons are spoiling it. Keep writing to inform those of us who are unable to be there right now. Thanks, Mrs Lowrie-Chin and Observer.
