Regional energy ministers for US conference
WASHINGTON DC, United States, CMC — Energy ministers from two Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries will join their counterparts from Central America for a three-day meeting in South Florida.
The Organisation of American States (OAS) says it has joined with the United States Department of State and the Brazil government in organising the August 26-28 “Renewable Energy Meeting and Site Visit for Energy Ministers from Central America and the Caribbean”.
The energy ministers from Haiti and Jamaica will join officials from the Dominican Republic, El Salvador and Guatemala for the event.
The organisers said that the site visit is an activity of the US – Brazil bilateral Memorandum of Understanding to advance cooperation on biofuels, while enabling the exchange of information with several third-party countries in Central America and the Caribbean that have unique opportunities for the development and local use of biofuels.
“The site visit will facilitate the sharing of experiences and information on several alternative energy solutions, including biofuels and solar power. It will also enable the exchange of innovative programmes and policies that encourage the development and use of clean energy alternatives,” the organisers said in a statement.
Chief of the OAS Energy section, Mark Lambrides, said that the hemispheric body “is committed to supporting its member states in the articulation of a sustainable energy policy and programmes”.
“This event seeks to strengthen energy cooperation among participating countries, placing special emphasis on the promotion of sustainable bioenergy development and use as an alternative to imported oil,” he added.
