Jamalco, Mico for Senior League final
MAY PEN, Clarendon — Jamalco remain on course to defend their Clarendon/Juici Patties Senior League netball title after topping Windalco 65-59 in the semi-final on Sunday at Mineral Heights Courts.
The Winston Nevers-condition unit will now play newcomers Mico University College in today’s final for a chance to cop the $60,000 winner’s bounty.
Mico thrashed Holmwood ‘A’, 64-29, in the other semi-final to keep their 100 per cent win record intact.
In the battle of the Super League giants, Windalco were first out of the blocks — establishing a five-point (17-12) first-quarter lead — but saw that deficit cut to one (30-29) at half-time after Jamalco rallied for a 17-13 win in the second stanza.
Spurred by the return of star shooter Romelda Aiken from the ANZ Championship in Australasia, Jamalco seized the advantage in the second half, taking the third period, 19-13, and the final, 17-16.
Windalco’s Anna-Kay Griffiths, fresh from national duties in Australia and New Zealand, shot a game-high 40 points, with Viola Francis-Cummings adding 19 points from 26.
Aiken hit 35 of her 39 attempts for Jamalco and got good support from veteran Elaine Davis (30 from 37).
In the second game, Mico were expected to make light work of Holmwood, and they did just that.
The Annett Daley-coach college girls led throughout the contest after registering quarterly scores of 15-5, 15-9, 17-7 and 17-8.
Sharna Cardice spearheaded the attack with 50 points from 58 tries, while young Deneen Taylor netted 18 from 26 for Holmwood.
In Junior League action, unbeaten Longville Park set-up a date in the final with Ricam following a 31-17 triumph over Glenmuir High in one semi-final, while Ricam eliminated Toll Gate, 29-20, in the second.
