Petrojam, Wisynco are Business House football champs

Petrojam and Wisynco Group were crowned champions in Divisions One and Two of the 2010 Western Sports-sponsored Kingston & St Andrew Business House Football Competition last Saturday, after they defeated Carib Cement and Wray & Nephew in the finals, 2-1 and 2-0, respectively at the UWI Bowl, Mona.

In the Division Two final, Wisynco Group defeated Wray & Nephew for the second time to cop the double, as they previously clipped them 1-0 in the knockout final.

The game was an evenly contested affair until in the 81st minute when Omar Washington’s powerful shot from the top of the 18-yard box beat goalkeeper Julian McLeish to his right for the first goal of the match.

Girvon Brown scored his 16 goal of the season, as he capitalised on McLeish’s poor clearance in the 90th minute to tap into an empty goal and ensure that his team finish the season without conceding a goal. They got $40,000, while Wray & Nephew received $20,000.

In the Division One final, Carib Cement started poorly, as in the ninth minute Oniel Gayle gave away a penalty as he brought down Petrojam’s Richard Monroe in the box and he was red carded by referee Kevin Thomas.

Asphas Bernard scored the resulting kick to give his team the lead. Ten-man Carib Cement did not give up and four minutes later, they were level as Fabian Nethersole beat Damion Campbell to make it 1-1.

Both teams fought hard to find the winner but, goalkeepers Russell Hosang and Damion Campbell prevented this. Petrojam got the winner in the final minute of play when David Stultz curled a shot from 30 yards out to beat goalkeeper Hosang in goal.

Petrojam were also completing an excellent season, as they were undefeated in the league competition in their first season in Division One. They also won $60,000, with Carib Cement pocketing $40,000.

The curtain will come down tomorrow when Petrojam and Wisynco Group meet in the Challenge Cup final at the NWC Playing field, Mona at 4:00 pm.
