What role, if any, can Governor General Sir Patrick Allen play in defusing the public row brewing between Mr Greg Christie and Miss Paula Llewellyn?

I am saddened and shudder at the thought that these two public officials are sounding off like the PNP and the JLP.

The scathing criticism in the Office of Contractor General’s (OCG’s) annual report levelled at the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and at Miss Llewellyn in particular shows that something is wrong.

Like most Jamaicans, I was elated when Miss Llewellyn got the job as DPP. I thought that both Miss Llewellyn and Mr Christie would have worked together as a team zealously prosecuting and driving fear into the hearts of corrupt officials.

I feel let down learning of the reported foot-dragging, the non-prosecution of some of the cases the OCG has submitted to the Office of DPP, and the lack of communication between both offices.

In the USA — a country we love to emulate — it is an offence to lie to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the government prosecutes those who lie. In our country our law says it is an offence to lie to the Office of Contractor General, and where the OCG finds that such an offence is committed he then sends material to the DPP to prosecute.

I feel that Mr Christie and Miss Llewellyn can do for Jamaica what the PNP and JLP failed to do. They should find common ground and realise that they are on the same team for rights and justice.

I beseech the governor general to call a meeting with these two agents of the state to quell any row they may have. He should also recommend that both offices meet frequently, discuss their findings and iron out their differences.
