GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) — Guyana skipper Ramnaresh Sarwan believes the failed Champions League Twenty20 campaign was a learning curve for his side.

“I think we can take a lot of positives out of the tournament. Yes, we did not play really well and I am sure we disappointed Guyana, and by extension the Caribbean, but I think it was a learning experience for our team,” Sarwan said Tuesday.

Guyana finished the lucrative CLT20 tournament without a single win after losing to Indian Premier League sides Royal Challengers Bangalore, Mumbai Indians, Highveld Lions of South Africa and the South Australia Redbacks.

The Caribbean side, clearly lacking the experience to match talents with their more seasoned opponents, never looked like winning any of their matches.

“There were some amount of nervousness in the camp from the beginning, and then the conditions were also difficult,” Sarwan explained.

“The distance to South Africa [is] long. A lot of the guys travelled that distance for the first time and playing against many international stars played a part in our downfall, but hopefully the guys would have learnt a lot.

“I think they showed the world their talent, but just the senior guys struggled a lot, and [that] may have contributed to the losses.

“But as I said, we have to take it from there and try and build our game from here on, and once the guys continue to get good guidance, they will get better.”

Guyana booked their spot in the CLT20 after winning the Caribbean Twenty20 in July, beating Barbados by one wicket with a ball to spare in the final in Trinidad and Tobago.

Sarwan, the management team, and officials who travelled to South Africa for the CLT20 were expected to meet with Sports Minister Dr Frank Anthony on Wednesday.
