Smile Awhile

Style Observer

It was mere weeks after the stunning Yendi Phillipps copped second place in Donald Trump’s Miss Universe competition when we asked her chiselled-to-perfection beau, world-class Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell, to tell us what he’d do were he Mayor of Kingston for a day. Flashing that easy smile of his, his response — “I’d declare the day a National Smile Day!” left us considering the possibilities. What if we were to do just that?

Well, for starters, SO has captured some of what we consider some of the widest, brightest, happiest smiles, led of course by Asafa and the woman who is giving him a lot to smile about of late… Enjoy!

Asafa Powell

“I’m happiest when I’m stress-free and with friends. What makes me smile? Everything including being Jamaican makes me smile!”

Yendi Phillipps

“Family and friends…good food makes my heart smile, too…and extreme sports!”

Donovan Bailey

“What makes me smile? Falling in love with Jamaica every day that I spend here.”

Chris Dehring

“I smile whever I see children playing and beautiful women.”

Kerry-Ann Clarke

“Oh my God! Life makes me smile: just being with my husband, my family and my pets. Seeing orchids in bloom also makes me smile.”

Rochelle Cameron and Janice Allen

Rochelle: “Shoes, coming from the hairdresser and feeling all beautiful…food and friends make me smile!”

Janice: “What makes me smile? Friends, good food and something nice to drink.”

Makeba Bennett Easy

“Thoughts of my hubby, I love good conversation and a great joke, and oh yes…shopping and travelling always put a smile on my face!”

Marco Pierre White

A few fags and an ice-cold Red Stripe on a hot summer day is enough to make anyone smile…just ask Food Awards celebrity guest chef Marco Pierre White who was clearly enjoying the scene at Jojo’s.

Nina and Jeremy Harding

Jeremy: “A night out with my wife knowing that our kids are safe at home: that makes me smile.”

Nina: “I love seeing us with the children, I love seeing the way how Jeremy looks at Layla and Chase when they’re all playing. That always makes me smile.”

Richard Barton and Caroline McCann

“What actually makes us smile is being in each other’s company, being around good friends and fine wine.”

Roxanne Shields

“It doesn’t take much to make me smile…it just comes naturally. And if I smile, hopefully someone else will, too.”

Consuela Blake

“A satisfied customer makes me smile.”

Sara Mair

“What makes me smile is cooking and happy days.”

Steve Wilson and Mia Nikolajev

Steve: “Single Malt Scotch, Negril sunsets, rivers, and my daughter’s smile. I’m happiest when I’m with friends, family and loved ones… especially at Brand New Machine!”

Mia: “Life makes me smile — sometimes it’s happy, sometimes it’s funny, and sometimes you smile to not cry.”

Naima Gregory

“A laughing baby is always sure to put a smile on my face.”

Hermine Metcalfe

“I think I smile because I am happy and feel content. A lot of things that happen in my life make me smile — good news — someone having a child, passing an exam, when I hear from good friends. I can’t think of any one thing, just anything at all that’s positive.”

Aswad and Aisha Morgan

Aisha: “What makes me smile is my family, closest girlfriends, and my three dogs. But I’m happiest when I’m on vacation with hubby, somewhere exotic… no Internet, no mobile phones.”

Aswad: “Memories of some joke or comment from one of my many social interactions. I really do enjoy a good laugh.”

Oji Jaja

“My son, cooking, my family and friends make me happy. But what put a really big smile on my face recently was when my one-year-old son Akili took up the broom and proceeded to attempt to sweep.”

Krystle Brown

“What makes me smile? Waking up every morning and seeing my son… and knowing that I’m pursuing my dreams.”

Christopher Daley

“What makes me smile? My kids… and getting paid!!! (laughs) My kids, and spending good quality time with my friends make me happy. My happiest moment in 2010 has been my new lease on life… and I’ll leave it at that.”

Tshani Jaja

“Life — it sounds corny, but it’s true… and the thought of my son.”

Tami Chynn

“My husband Wayne makes me smile. He’s very busy but he’s also very thoughtful. Hes’s always doing small things to show me his love: that always makes me smile.”

Timberlee Heaven

“What makes me smile is thinking about all my personal achievements.”

Sam Fine

“Mo’Nique, Vanessa Williams, Trya Banks, Iman and Naomi,” were the names celebrity make-up artiste Sam Fine listed as he told SO who has him on speed dial. Now, if that doesn’t make one smile, we’re not sure what else would.

Sara Lawrence

“Witty, sarcastic, naturally funny people make me smile the most. I am a very sarcastic person in everyday life and would say a lot of things that would fly over the average person’s head. When I am in the presence of someone who is right on my wavelength and when something happens we can just look at each other and without saying a word LAUGH on cue… That really makes my life!!!”

Jean Lowrie-Chin and daughter Anita Chin

Jean: “Memories of ‘spending time’ at my Grandma’s house and my schooldays at Alpha make me smile.”

Anita: “A beautiful day makes me smile, but I’m happiest when I am with close family and putting my culinary skills to use.”

Eva Myers

“I smile when I see people happy. And seeing things that are beautiful — things going well, a beautiful day, a beautiful child, wonderful music, food tasting well. I’m in Italy as we speak, reacquainting myself with pasta, and I’ve got a smile on my face right now!”
