JA cop two silvers, a bronze at games
JAMAICA added two silver and one bronze medal in athletics yesterday bringing its tally to six including two gold, three silver, and one bronze after eight days of competition at the 2010 Commonwealth Games continued in Delhi, India.
Lansford Spence clocked a personal best 20.49 seconds to capture silver in the men’s 200m behind England’s Leon Baptiste in a time of 20.45 seconds.
Spence had earlier lowered his personal best to 20.54 in advancing to the final after finishing third in semi-final one also won by Baptiste in a personal best 20.43.
Another Jamaican, Rasheed Dwyer failed to advance to the final after posting 21.13 for fifth in semi-final two.
Sheree Francis claimed silver in the women’s high jump after clearing the bar at 1.88 metres behind Canada’s Nicole Forrester who cleared the post at 1.91 metres. Lavern Spencer of St Lucia was third with 1.88.
Nickiesha Wilson added the sixth medal after securing bronze in the women’s 400m hurdles, clocking 56.06 for third in the final behind Muizat Odumosu of Nigeria in 55.28 and Eiludh Child of Scotland in 55.62 seconds.
Adrian Findlay failed to secure a medal in the men’s equivalent after finishing seventh in the final in 50.48. Wales’ David Greene won in 48.52 with South Africa’s Louis Van Zyl second in 48.63.
Meanwhile, Andrea Bliss qualified for today’s final of the women’s 100m hurdles after she posted 13.34 for second in semi-final one of the first round behind Sally Pearson of Australia in 13.02 and lines up in lane six of this afternoon’s final.
Jamaica will have no representative in the women’s 200m after Audria Segree and Nadia Cunningham both failed to advance.
Segree clocked 24.36 seconds to finish fifth in semifinal two, while Cunningham was seventh in semi-final three in 24.85.
The relays begin today and Commonwealth record-holders Jamaica will line up in lane two of semi-final two of the men’s 4x400m relay alongside the Bahamas, Sierra Leone, Nigeria, Wales, Australia, and Sri Lanka.
The women also line up in semi-final two running from lane four alongside Sierra Leone, Scotland, Botswana, England, and Uganda.
The Jamaican men will line up in lane three in the last semi-final of three in the 4x100m relay with England, Kenya, Sierra Leone, Canada, and the Solomon islands.
Meanwhile, in Badminton, all the mixed doubles pair were beaten in matches yesterday.
In boxing, Phillip Bowes progress was stopped at the quarter-finals of the men’s light welterweight (64kg) division when he was beaten 6:0 on points by Louis Colin of Mauritius.
Elsewhere, in men’s doubles table tennis, Joseph Dibbs and Simon Tomlinson got a walk over Kajubi and Migade of Uganda while Kane Watson and Imani McPherson stopped Jerome and Taylor of Dominica 11-8, 14-12, 11-8.
All four Jamaicans were beaten in their singles encounters.
