FORTY-ONE new undergraduate students of the University of the West Indies (UWI) are beneficiaries of the prestigious UWI Open Scholarships for the academic year 2010/2011.

The 2010 UWI Open Scholars were selected from approximately 900 applicants from across UWI’s 15 Caribbean member countries. The awardees are from Anguilla, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Jamaica, St Kitts, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and The Bahamas. Of the 41 students awarded, 29 are female and 12 male. They are pursuing degree programmes across the faculties of engineering, law, humanities and education, medical sciences, science and agriculture, pure and applied sciences, and social sciences at UWI’s Cave Hill, Mona and St Augustine campuses.

The net value of this year’s Open Scholarship awards is approximately US $1.1 million. The scholarships will cover the cost of tuition (where applicable), living expenses, books, and incidentals, and will be renewed based on the students’ maintenance of a minimum grade point average of 3.0 throughout their course of study.

In a presentation to the UWI’s executive management team, Professor Alvin Wint, pro vice chancellor for the board for undergraduate studies, announced the students and the details of the Open Scholarships.

“These awards evidence the UWI’s ability to attract some of the region’s highest academic achievers and we are especially pleased to reward these scholars for their hard work,” he said.

The UWI Open Scholarships are awarded annually to Caribbean nationals on the basis of high academic achievement at the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) or equivalent examinations, demonstrated leadership in co-curricular activities and/or community service.
