‘I love dancing!’ Michelle Obama charms orphaned Indian students

Michelle Obama played hopscotch, danced and sang with 33 disadvantaged children from the Indian charity Make a Difference Saturday at the University of Mumbai. Almost immediately after arriving at the university’s library, she kicked off her flats and joined in a game of vocabulary-building hopscotch with the eight to 13-year-old orphans and runaways who receive English language instruction from Make a Difference volunteers.

“I love dancing! Oh that was fun!” Michelle Obama said after dancing to the theme song from the Bollywood movie Rang de Basanti. She also joined a drum and tambourine circle with the children, banging on a tambourine while the kids pounded on drums. After dancing, she spoke to the children about the importance of having an education. “I didn’t grow up with a lot of money, I never even imagined being the first lady of the United States. But because I had an education, when the time came to do this, I was ready,” she told them. The kids fell silent after one girl asked a question, so the first lady urged another round of dancing. “Let’s dance some more! One more dance!” she said, and was quickly surrounded by a bouncing circle of girls throwing their arms in the air while the boys nearby jumped up and down.

Before leaving, the first lady sent each child home with a tote bag stuffed with educational materials — notebooks, pencils, pens and White House M&Ms. Jithin Nedumala, 23, who forsook an MBA to help found Make a Difference in 2006, said he hoped the first lady’s visit would inspire the children he works with. “We are here to tell the children to dream big, they’re in orphanages and street shelters where they don’t have their parents to push them. Not many people believe in these kids,” he explained.

Rihanna and boyfriend Matt Kemp attempt to go incognito as they jet out of London

They’re one of the most sought-after couples in show business, but Rihanna and boyfriend Matt Kemp are still trying to maintain a low-key relationship. The pair attempted to go incognito as they jetted out of London on Saturday to head to Madrid, Spain, but were spotted by photographers as they arrived at Heathrow Airport. While baseball player Matt kept it simple with a hood pulled up over his head, Rihanna drew slightly more attention to herself by concealing her face under a huge black shawl. The pop star, who has been working hard promoting her upcoming album Loud in London, has flown to Spain ahead of this weekend’s MTV European Music Awards where she will perform her new single Only Girl (In The World). Talking about the record, which is her fifth studio album, she said: “Overall, I would say that the album is the most true Rihanna album, in terms of the sound and the energy and the look and the vibe of it, and the lyrics and the West Indian twang. Everything about it is tailored to me, and nobody else could have done any of those songs, which is why I love it because you hear it and you get it.”

Katherine Heigl’s beautiful baby daughter makes her cover girl modelling debut

That’s definitely one for the family album, Katherine Heigl’s beautiful adopted daughter Naleigh makes her modelling debut on the cover of the December issue of W magazine’s family issue. In the stunning cover picture, the actress channels old Hollywood glamour with her long blonde hair in soft waves and a strapless black gown while she lovingly cradles the gorgeous little girl wrapped in white frilly netting in her arms.

Heigl adopted Naleigh, who was born in South Korea with congenital heart problems that were later corrected through surgery, just “three or four days” before she started work on Life As we Know It. “I was about to play a woman who inherits a baby, and I was experiencing the exact same thing. My sister is Korean, I hope one day she and Naleigh will be able to talk about what it’s like to be adopted,” she said in an interview with the magazine. Heigl has talked extensively about her decision to adopt, claiming that she feels it was her destiny to do so. She finalised the adoption of Naleigh with her husband, musician Josh Kelley, in September 2009.
