WOLMER’S Boys’ School and Immaculate Conception captured the boys and girls team titles at the finals of the 2010 LIME Inter-Secondary High Schools Tennis Championships that ended at the Eric Bell Tennis Centre on Saturday.

In the finals, Wolmer’s Boys’ upset top seed and defending champions Campion College 4-2, while defending champions and top seed Immaculate defeated Wolmer’s Girls’ School 4-3 to retain their title. It was Immaculate’s 12th team title success in the last 15 years.

The competition attracted schools from the eastern, central and western zones, with the winners and runners-up advancing to the quarter-finals.

Ramone Doyley of Campion gave his team a 1-0 lead in the first singles by defeating Ramario Moncriffe 6-2, 6-0 before the scores drew level at 1-1 apiece when Wolmer’s Alex Anderson beat Kristof Gayle 6-3, 6-1.

Wolmer’s eventually took a 2-1 lead after Cory Richmond’s straight sets 6-2, 6-2 win over Phillip Shum. However, Campion won the fourth singles through Andrew Bicknell, who beat Jonathon Goldson 6-1, 6-3 to level the match 2-2.

The doubles became the most critical section of the match and Doyley and Bicknell paired to give Campion the lead 3-2, but Wolmer’s fought back in the next two doubles, when Audi Smith and Moncrieffe beat Sared Pitt and Gary Barnett 6-3, 7-5 to tie the match 3-3. Richmond and Anderson defeated Gayle and Shum 6-1, 6-4 to clinch the tie and the match 4-3.

Meanwhile, in the girls final, Michaelann Denton gave champions Immaculate the lead when she defeated Phadria Kepple of Wolmer’s, who retired, trailing 6-4, 5-4 in the singles. The scores were tied 1-1 after Sarah Orrett of Wolmer’s beat Sonam Khemlani 6-1, 7-6 (7-5 tie-breaker).

Wolmer’s took a 2-1 lead in the third singles match through Kalisse Kelly, who defeated Serena Harjani, who retired at 6-7 (8-6 tie-breaker) 5-0. Megan Veira pulled back a swift win for Immaculate by crushing Suizanne Walker of Wolmer’s to level the match 2-2.

Again the doubles had to decide the winning team and Immaculate went up 3-2 when Denton and Khemlani defeated Orrett and Analise Mosley 6-1, 6-4 before Wolmer’s tied the match 3-3 after Kasheem and Peter-Ann Higgins whipped Kepple and Kelly of Wolmer’s 6-0, 6-2.

The final set in the doubles to determined the winning team proved no match for Immaculate as Veira and Harjani easily disposed of Tannica Fogarthy and Walker 6-1, 6-0.

Presentations were held after both finals with Alex Anderson and Michaelann Denton voted the most valuable players of the championships; Wolmer’s Girls and Montego Bay High shared the most disciplined award for girls, while Jamaica College received the most disciplined team award for boys. St. Andrew High won the award for the most improved school in the competition.

Trophies were handed out to the zone winners and runners-up in the preliminary rounds. Eastern Zone for boys was won by former champions Campion College with Wolmer’s Boys’ runners-up, while defending champions Immaculate Conception won the Eastern Zone for girls and Wolmer’s Girls runners-up.

Central Zone was won by Munro College from Manchester High for boys while Hampton High took the Girls Central Zone title from Manchester High. Hienz Simonitsch won the Western Zone for boys title with Ocho Rios High runners-up, while Montego Bay High came out on top in the Western Zone for girls with Ocho Rios High runners-up.

The top coaches were David Sanguinetti of Wolmer’s Boys’ and Carlos Philpotts for Immaculate Conception. Trophies were presented by Edward Gabbidon, vice-president Sales at LIME and Aubyn Hill, president of the Tennis Jamaica.
