UTech students host safe sex seminar
As a requirement for their Events Management course, the hospitality and tourism management students at the University of Technology held a safe sex seminar. Taking place last Wednesday, the team attracted many students and staff alike, to the sponsor booths and activities on the campus’ Sculpture Park.
Undoubtedly, the biggest buzz was the mobile testing unit by the National Family Planning Board that offered free HIV testing to a number of persons. Continuing around the park, patrons were seen at the Carimed booth and the Grace booth, while they kept a keen eye on the host and the featured giveaways.
As students gathered, they were reminded of the event’s slogan ‘Wrap It Up Before You Back It Up’ as they gathered information from the booths and watched on-stage demonstrations showing the correct and most effective way of putting on a condom. This demonstration was followed by a ‘condom race’ which entailed that a female and male student race to put on a condom in the shortest possible time, and of course it had to be done correctly.
A number of speakers touched on sensitive but important topics of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), the importance of getting tested and the importance of abstinence, or wearing a condom every time. The speaker who seemed to intrigue students the most was a representative from Yute X who told his story of living with HIV.
In-between it all, DJ Kris from Venomusik kept the vibe alive with a selection of popular hits while the crowd enjoyed giveaways of credit and gift bags.
