‘Young blood’ fuels Arnett win
COACH Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis had high praises for his youthful Arnett Gardens team after a goal in each half from Dennis McKenley and Kirk Ramsay guided them to a 2-0 win over Trench Town rivals Boys’ Town in Sunday’s Digicel Premier League fixture at the Anthony Spaulding Sports Complex.
The win puts Arnett Gardens in eighth place on 19 points from 15 games, while Boys’ Town remain in third on 26, also from 15.
After their fourth win of the season, coach Davis expressed satisfaction at the hunger showed by his team in what was a fiercely contested encounter.
“This is what a derby game should be like; exciting and full of action and goals. My team did well and played with a lot of guts. We are trying to get this team back on par and how we played tonight (Sunday) is an example of where we want to go.
“This team needs to grow and I have said before that we weren’t bringing in a lot of youngsters and you can see the football here is dying out so you need the young bloods to come in. The young players (who played) today (Sunday) were told that they are supposed to run and they really did that,” an elated Davis said.
McKenley got Arnett into the lead after 22 minutes when he drilled home a rebound after speedy forward Fabian Reid saw his effort blocked by Boy’s Town ‘keeper Philmore Crumbie.
Arnett custodian Maurice Evans then pulled off a couple of telling saves before Ramsay conjured up a moment of brilliance three minutes into the second half to effectively sink Boys’ Town.
The former Rivoli player half-turned and executed a sweet volley to beat Crumbie’s despairing dive to send his team into an unassailable 2-0 lead.
Davis was also impressed with his team’s defensive execution and highlighted the level of communication that exists between the outstanding Evans and his defenders.
“Our defence and goalkeeper are one of our strengths and they did well today (Sunday). They have a good understanding so my job now is to also make the midfielders and strikers have that kind of understanding,” he said.
Boys’ Town coach Andrew Price blamed his team’s lackadaisical approach as the main reason for the loss.
“We just came out flat, we didn’t have any energy today (Sunday) and we were very lethargic and it was one of those games where nothing went right. If you don’t show energy you are not going to get good results out of the game,” he mourned.
