Trinidadian cop, two others charged in police station attack
PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) — Three men, including a municipal police officer, have been charged with the murder of acting Corporal Anuska Eversley following a brazen attack at a police station in southern Trinidad that also saw the theft of firearms and ammunition.
The Trinidad Guardian has reported that Commissioner of Police Allister Guevarro said the charges were laid after the Director of Public Prosecutions, Roger Gaspard, gave investigators the directive to proceed.
Those charged include municipal police officer Jivan Cooper, 28, along with a 24-year-old scrap-iron dealer and a 20-year-old construction worker. All three men face joint charges of murder, robbery with violence, firearm trafficking and possession of ammunition.
Guevarro said the charges followed coordinated police operations across Claxton Bay, Gasparillo, Macaulay and surrounding areas, which led to the recovery of 44 firearms, along with large quantities of ammunition and magazines.
“These charges arise out of coordinated enquiries and recovery operations conducted over the past several days,” the police commissioner said, adding that investigations are continuing to identify other suspects and recover additional weapons.
Eversley, a 42-year-old mother of three, was found dead at the San Fernando Municipal Police Station on Lady Hailes Avenue around 4:40 am on Sunday. Police said her body bore signs of violence and officers later discovered that firearms and ammunition were missing from the station’s armoury.
Authorities have not yet confirmed the total number of weapons stolen, with Guevarro saying an audit is ongoing.
In the wake of the incident, the head of the Municipal Police Service, Surrendra Sagramsingh, has been sent on leave and replaced by Wayne Mystar. Five officers attached to the station have also been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
