St Hugh’s, Queen’s hunt Urban Area titles
THE Queen’s will set their eyes on the double as the ISSA/Digicel Urban Area High Schoolgirl netball finals are contested this afternoon at the Leila Robinson Courts.
The defending All-Island champions and the Urban Area Junior League champions will square-off with Meadowbrook at 2:15 pm, while defending Senior League champions St Hugh’s face The Queen’s at 3:00 pm.
The two games are expected to be keenly contested as all four teams are unbeaten all season. The Queen’s reached the junior final by defeating St Hugh’s, 28-18, while Meadowbrook got past St Catherine, 20-18.
St Hugh stopped St Andrew High, 24-17, in their senior semi-final, while The Queen’s beat Bridgeport, 26-22.
According to St Hugh’s coach Phillip St Marie, his team is the defending champions for the Senior League and will be playing very hard to retain the title.
“I’m not going to take Queen’s lightly as they’re a good team and they are also gunning for victory. My team will play basic netball. I think we can retain the title if the players play to instructions…,” St Marie said.
Queen’s coach Marvette Anderson said it’s good to have two teams in the final and expected both to do well.
“I cannot say I’m totally confident to chase victory, but I always said the ball is round. I expect that the experience should take my team to victory and the chances are very good…,” Anderson said.
Meanwhile, Meadowbrook have reach their first ever final in schoolgirl netball, but will have a tough task against The Queen’s.
In the third-place junior play-offs, St Catherine and St Hugh’s meet at 1:30 pm, while the senior equivalent between St Andrew and Bridgeport tips off at the same time.
