Teams jostle for Southern Conference quarters
CAMPION College kept alive their hopes of qualifying for the ISSA/KFC Southern Conference basketball quarters after beating Vauxhall, 86-18, in a Zone One U-19 game on Monday.
Leeken Brown scored a game-high 26 for Campion, who moved to third on 11 points, behind second-place Jamaica College (JC), who have 12 from six matches, and Calabar, who have a maximum 14 from seven.
Calabar and JC are already in the quarters. However, Campion, Kingston College (10) and St Catherine (nine) still have a chance at the last two spots.
In Zone Two, Hydel failed to show against qualifiers St George’s College, who lead with 13 points. Meadowbrook stayed alive with a 48-31 win over Excelsior, while St Jago scored their first win in six matches over Papine.
St George’s lead STATHS — who have won six from six games and have played a game less — by a point. They are followed by Hydel and Meadowbrook, both with nine from six.
In the U-16s, Zone Two qualifiers St Jago defeated Tivoli, 51-39, for their seventh win. Kashies Clarke was St Jago’s topscorer with 21 points.
Wolmer’s and Meadowbrook stayed in the hunt with wins over Innswood and Excelsior. Wolmer’s beat Innswood, 77-24, to move to fifth on nine points from six games — two behind Meadowbrook, who beat Excselsior, 40-20.
St George’s pocketed the points for their game against no-show Hydel, while in Zone One, Vauxhall scored a crucial 46-51 win over Campion to throw that group wide open.
Calabar are the only confirmed qualifier. Vauxhall joined Campion in second on 13, but Ardenne (10), with three games to play, and KC and St Catherine, with 12 each and two matches remaining, are still in the race.
