Boyz eye final
SAINTE-LUCE, Martinique — The high-flying Reggae Boyz will attempt another hurdle in their quest to retain the Digicel Caribbean Cup title when they face Grenada in the semi-final at the Pierre Aliker, Dillon Stadium at 8:30 pm (7:30 pm Jamaica time).
At 5:30, Group H winners face Group I runners-up Guadeloupe. Four-time champions
Jamaica have been by far the most outstanding team of the tournament, registering a perfect three wins from as many starts, including nine goals from six scorers, with just a solitary strike against.
Three players — Luton Shelton, Dane Richards and Marvin Morgan — lead the Jamaican team and tournament with two goals, while Ryan Johnson, Shaun Francis and Eric Vernan have one each.
The next best team in the competition is Cuba with two wins, and three goals for and none against.
Jamaica opened their campaign last Saturday with a 3-1 win over Antigua and Barbuda, then followed up with a 2-0 result over Guadeloupe, before rounding out the preliminary phase with a 4-0 thumping of Guyana, though head coach Theodore Whitmore rested six players from his regular starting 11.
Despite the superior statistics, there will be little joy if the Boyz were to come away from Martinique without the trophy, and Whitmore is adamant complacency has no place in his team.
“We expect a tough game,” the former Reggae Boyz skipper said. “… any time the Jamaican team goes up against any team in the Caribbean it’s gonna be a tough game and we’ve been preparing… for the past couple of weeks and I don’t think it will be anything different come this Friday,” he added.
In Wednesday’s game, Jamaica were without captain and central defender Shavar Thomas, as well as ace midfielder Rodolph Austin, due to yellow card suspension.
Both are expected back today, and Whitmore was particularly happy that both central defender Adrian Reid and defensive midfielder Richard Edwards escaped from Wednesday’s game without receiving additional cautions, which would have ruled them out of today’s game.
“It is a positive sign going in to the semi-final with all guns blazing, so I guess we are looking forward to Friday for a victory,” he said, referring to the fact that he has a full, healthy squad to choose from.
The team’s frontline striker Omar Cummings, of the US champions Colorado Rapids, is yet to tally a goal at the tournament, having been troubled with a right quad problem, but Whitmore welcomes the selection headache between himself and Ryan Johnson, who though short of match practice, managed a goal in the second game and set up both of Morgan’s goals against Guyana.
“I think Ryan is a bit rusty, you could see it in his game in terms of touches and everything, but we have Cummings as well, so it is something we will have to sit and look at in which direction we are going for the semifinal,” Whitmore conceded.
The Boyz had a light workout at the Armand Ribier Stadium yesterday afternoon, and ended their session with penalty kicks, an option if neither team can find a winning goal during regulation and extra time.
Jamaica’s probable team: Dwayne Miller, Shavar Thomas, Adrian Reid, Jermaine Taylor, Rodolph Austin, Shaun Francis, Lovell Palmer, Keammar Daley, Dane Richards, Luton Shelton and Omar Cummings or Ryan Johnson.
