Cornwall top divisions in Conference prelims
WAKEFIELD, Trelawny — Cornwall College topped both sections of the ISSA/Western Conference high schools basketball competition after wins over Muschett High on Wednesday completed their preliminary round.
The Sheldon Pearson-coached boys completed their schedule with an impressive run, sweeping their last six set of games.
The U-19 team, which was led by a career-high 51 points from Christopher Ray Smith in their 121-56 win over Muschett, topped their section with 19 points and will be joined in the top four by Herbert Morrison, Mannings and Spot Valley.
The U-16 team avenged an earlier loss to Muschett, 54-53, to finish with 18 points, well ahead of Rhodes Hall and Holland, both on 15. Muschett have 14 and Herbert Morrison 13.
In the U-19 game, Cornwall were off to a fast start, racing to a 31-6 lead after the first quarter and were up 67-20 at half-time.
Smith had 26 rebounds and two blocked shots; Robert McIntosh scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds; Tevin Brown scored 17 points and had 13 assists, along with five steals, while Alex McFarlane scored 12 points, had 12 rebounds and eight steals and assists.
Odean Clarke scored 19 points for Muschett, while Mikhail Cover scored 12.
In the U-16 game, Romaine Hines had a quadruple-double of 15 points 12 rebounds, 11 steals and 10 assists for Cornwall. Janoll Levy led the scoring with 18 points, 17 rebounds and nine blocked shots, while Kyle Schloss scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds.
Michael Schloss scored 15 points for Muschett, while Christopher Gibbons had 12.
The preliminary rounds will end today with Herbert Morrison hosting Muschett in two games at Bogue, Montego Bay.
