FIFA gives Ghana deadline to end gov’t interference
ACCRA, Ghana (AP) — FIFA says Ghana will be referred to its emergency committee if the country’s government does not stop interfering in football matters before Sunday.
FIFA confirms to The Associated Press that it sent a letter to the Ghana Football Association yesterday, promising action “if the Ghanaian authorities did not stop their direct intervention” before Sunday.
Ghana’s Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) raided the GFA headquarters on Tuesday, removing eight computers and preventing football officials from entering the workplace. Ghana’s domestic football league has also been put on hold.
In yesterday’s statement to the AP, FIFA says “it is not acceptable if the GFA is not in a position anymore to exercise the core of its mandate.”
