R&B act promises something old, new, borrowed and blue for local show
TOMORROW, American R&B singer Betty Wright is expected to thrill her many fans here in Jamaica.
The singer has scored time and time again with chart-toppers, such as No Pain, No Gain, Girls You Can’t Do What The Guys Do, Tonight Is The Night, Clean Up Woman and so many more. Her songs are delivered with a lot of sexual innuendo but believe it or not, the singer admits to being really shy off the stage. “When I am on stage, I am full of fervour, but off it, I’m quiet and private,” Betty Wright confessed.
Apart from singing, Betty has another passion — one that is even more sacred to her — that of ministering God’s love. Wright has gotten more than a few raised brows on this spiritual side of her, but that doesn’t faze her.
For detractors who can’t see through her doing sexy love songs and being a vibrant force in the ministry of winning souls for Christ the singer remarks, “It’s utter stupidity behind the argument that I am singing the kind of songs I do, and being active in the Christian ministry.”
Wright, who acknowledges that her speciality is in marital ministry, says it’s important to read the scriptures before forming judgements.
“We don’t read the scripture. When you are with your husband, you don’t sing Jesus Keep Me Near the Cross, the singer quipped.
Wright was passionate about her beliefs as she says stupidity and negativity keep Christians separated.
Married to a Jamaican, this will not be Wright’s first trip to the island, but the excitement of performing for her fans here is still great.
On Saturday when she takes centrestage at the Liguanea Club in New Kingston, Wright says Jamaican R&B lovers can expect “something old, something new, something borrowed and something blue.”
Although she is expected to thrill the massive, Wright herself is looking forward to receiving a thrill of her own.
“The reaction of people when I sing gives me energy,” she says as she shared the story on one of her biggest hits No Pain No Gain, with Splash.
“That song was about a trial I was going through — I was just mad and that particular day, I was driving on my way to a radio station and it suddenly came to me that to get something you have to give something,” said Wright, adding that when she got to the station she was touched by their happiness at her arrival.
“They were so happy to see me and there I was complaining and these people love me like this,” she said.
Among one of the singles fans can expect to hear is a new song released by Wright entitled Go. She says the song has been creating an impact in the music circles.
The singer says she has been getting a lot of feedback from listeners who called her to say they are impressed with the song.
Go is about physical abuse and in it Wright really ministers, “You have to get up and go. I believe with my whole heart that I’m anointed to do this song, I believe it will yield results,” she said indicating that she is expecting women who are being abused to take inspiration and walk out of the relationships.
Inspiration for Wright came from her recently deceased mother, and from listening to a wide collection of artistes at home while growing up, such as Herbie Hancock, Beethoven, Bobby Womack, Otis Redding and Marvin Gaye.
We couldn’t help wondering what this talented singer would be doing if she hadn’t chosen this path. Wright didn’t have to think long and hard about it as she quickly fired, “I would probably be an interior decorator and coach football and basketball on the side.”
Tomorrow’s show which is being headlined by Wright also features Freddie McGregor, Tessanne Chin and Tarrus Riley.
