A St Thomas high school student who police said shot and killed a man and wounded another was yesterday denied bail when he appeared before the Yallahs Resident Magistrate’s Court.

The 17-year-old accused — who was charged along with another man — is facing charges of murder, wounding with intent and illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.

However, his co-accused Andre Robinson, who is facing similar charges, was remanded in custody after failing to take up a previous bail offer.

According to police reports, on April 6, the accused and others attacked 22-year-old Shion Francis and another man on the Newland Main Road in the parish.

Following the shooting, both injured men were taken to the Princess Margaret Hospital where Francis was pronounced dead and the other man was treated for a bullet wound.

Shortly after the incident, the student and Robinson were taken into custody.

But yesterday when the matter was raised, the juvenile’s bail application was refused after the investigating officer told the court that he was a flight risk as he could not be found after the incident.

However, the juvenile’s attorney, Ramone Nelson, argued that the police made no real attempts to find her client who she said had not gone into hiding and was in the parish attending school.

As a result Resident Magistrate Cresencia Brown ruled that a new date be scheduled for the investigating officer to update the court on the steps that were taken to locate the accused.

Both accused were remanded into custody until December 22.
