Tanker drivers on strike
THE island’s tanker drivers have today taken industrial action following a fall out between officials at the Petroleum Corporation of Jamaica (Petrojam) oil refinery and their union representative.
The group of drivers took action after National Workers’ Union’s (NWU) president, Vincent Morrison was barred from a meeting on the compound this morning.
Workers who have been on edge because of failure of authorities to honour a wage contract say they believe the act was a disrespect and as a result have stopped working.
“We cannot guarantee that normality will return until this issue is properly addressed,” Granville Valentine, the National Workers’ Union’s (NWU) Vice President told the Observer a few minutes ago.
Valentine said a meeting was set for 2:30 pm today at the labour ministry to continue discussions on wage increase and to address the problem.
