LAST week TEENage looked at some of the traditions on ‘The Rock’ for Christmas. And although, we love the fireworks and pepperlights, the Jonkunnu, Christmas food and getting our homes ready for the sason with fresh coats of paint, there are many more ways we celebrate Christmas Jam-dung style.

6 A Family Reunion

Christmas is a time for family and we Jamaicans go all out with our family reunions during the season. There are siblings, parents, cousins, aunts and even that random uncle who you haven’t seen since God-knows-when. Everyone gets together and have fun.

7 Grand Market Night

The night a good portion of us spend half a year planning for — don’t deny it. The suit is chosen from August, the shoes bought in October and you just got the bling the other day. Grand Market Night is an islandwide extravaganza of shopping, partying and fun until you say when.

8 Gift Giving

Everybody loves to get gifts at Christmas time — that new cellphone you wanted, a gift certificate to a spa or gym, even if it’s just a hug from that special someone. It’s great to receive gifts, but remember that it’s the season of giving too.

9 Church

Underneath all the food, fun and laughter we remember the true reason for the season — Christ. Church going during the Christmas season is so ingrained into us that TEENage couldn’t leave it off this list. Christmas morning, Christmas Sunday and New Year’s Eve see the Churches jam-packed as people dig a bit deeper into themselves and give honour to the man behind it all.

10 Entertainment

Jamaican Christmases are famous for the amount of entertainment that goes on. It’s literally tradition to watch Home Alone and How the Grinch Stole Christmas in this season. Christmas parties are everywhere- every corner, every yard and every business place. Sound systems pump out carols on the streets. There’s no lack of entertainment — at all.
