Sporting hold Reno to 1-1 draw
FROME, Westmoreland — Sporting Central Academy and home team Reno FC walked away from Frome with a point each following their spirited DPL game on Wednesday which ended 1-1.
Paying in a stiff easterly wind and brilliant sunshine before approximately 250 fans, Reno — with seven players from their Under-21 squad filling in for their senior counterparts who were missing due to cards and injury — were rattled in the 12th minute when former teammate Gary McIntosh pushed the Clarendon outfit into the lead with a classic finish over the head of goalkeeper Dennis Taylor.
The play began with a counter-attack by Sporting’s defence that ended with Jevaughn Watson just inside the Reno half.
He sent a grounded pass alongside the speedy McIntosh and between two Reno defenders, which saw the latter fending off his opponents before lobbing the advancing Taylor who was almost at the edge of his penalty area.
Unfazed by the deficit, Reno continued to pressure the visitors and were rewarded with a free-kick in the 24th after Kenroy Hutchinson was brought down from 23 yards.
Captain Obrian Woodbine curled a beauty over the head of the six-man wall and into the upper left-hand corner of Sporting’s goal, past goalie Andre Blake, who didn’t even attempt to move, thus levelling the score.
Sporting forced four corners before the break and in a more physical second half which saw them earning four cautions to Reno’s one from Referee Karl Tyrell, substitutes Jamoly Powell and Hughan Gray combined with Keithy Simpson, Francois Swaby and McIntosh, but to no avail against Reno defenders Woodbine, Omar Johnson, Linval Wilson, Andre Patterson and company.
The clearest opportunity to break the deadlock came in the 69th minute when Fabian Bake arrived unmarked in the Clarendonian’s penalty area, but booted a hasty shot over the crossbar.
