Business giant Dennis Lalor has died
KINGSTON, Jamaica — Chartered insurer and founder of ICWI Group Limited, Dennis Lalor, died Wednesday night.
He was ailing for some time.
Regarded as one of Jamaica’s business giants, Lalor built ICWI into one of the largest full-service financial institutions in the Caribbean with operations in Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean.
He also served on numerous boards throughout his long and sterling career. Among them are Air Jamaica, Freemasons Association (Jamaica) Limited, Jamaica Association for the Deaf, Lister Mair/Gilby School for the Deaf, Betting, Gaming & Lotteries Commission and the Jamaica Racing Commission.
Lalor also made an outstanding contribution to sports administration and financial developments in Jamaica, and in 1983 was awarded the Prime Minister’s Medal for his contribution to business and sports.
In 1989, he was inducted into Jamaica’s Hall of Fame of Thoroughbred Racing and received the Thoroughbred Breeders Regency Award for services to the horse racing industry.
In 1990, he was appointed a member of the Privy Council of Jamaica and became a member of the Council of the University of the West Indies.
He was also a member of the University Audit Committee.
Lalor also served as president of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica from 1990 to 1992 at a time when the organisation played a critical role in collaborating with the Jamaican government on its programme of liberalisation of the country’s economy.
