Fitz-Henley to represent Government at funeral of Sir Garfield Sobers
KINGSTON, Jamaica—State Minister in the Office of the Prime Minister, Senator Abka Fitz-Henley is set to represent the Government of Jamaica at the funeral of global cricket icon and Barbados National Hero, Sir Garfield Sobers.
The ceremony in honour of Sir Garfield is to take place at the Kensington Oval on Wednesday. It is set to begin at 9:00am Eastern Caribbean time, which is 8:00am in Jamaica.
Fitz-Henley is expected to reiterate to the Government of Barbados, Jamaica’s commiserations following the passing of Sir Garfield and appreciation of the impactful contribution of the Caribbean icon.
Fitz-Henley is attending the event as a representative for Sports Minister, Olivia Grange. Minister Grange is in Kingston coordinating the final preparations for the upcoming Jamaica 64 celebrations.
Sir Garfield Sobers died on July 17, 2026 at his home in Barbados. He was 89 years old.
