OCHO RIOS, St Ann — After several months of delay, Captain Horace Burrell on Wednesday opened his multi-million dollar bakery and grill in Ocho Rios, St Ann, bringing to eight the number of locations under the Captain’s Bakery banner island wide.

“I’m overwhelmed with the kind of response that we have gotten… it’s obvious that the people enjoy our products and I feel very optimistic that it was the right decision to locate a branch here,” Burrell told Sunday Finance at the launch.

The new bakery employs some 75 people and Burrell said based on the great demand for products, which he has observed since Wednesday, it is likely that he will have to employ more people.

“From what I have seen, it is likely that we could surge to a hundred, that again speaks volume to a Captains Bakery coming here because we are not only here to extract from the community, but we are also here to provide opportunities for young people and others,” he added.

“Based on the study which was conducted, this should be very successful… the brand is well known and the customers have made it known that the products are enjoyed by them all.”

The location offers customers a wide variety of of baked products, including cakes, breads, donuts and other tasty treats. Local dishes for breakfast, lunch and dinner are also on the menu.

Burrell said the branch, which should have been opened several months ago but faced some setbacks, is equipped with some of the most modern equipment. Indeed, according to the entrepreneur, the bakery has machines that can produce up to 100 dozen donuts and up to 1,000 loaves of bread in an hour.

“I am never one to speak about figures, but the type of set-up, modern technology, state-of-the-art equipment, will indicate the kind of spending that took place here… all I will say is that it was a huge trunk of money,” Burrell said when quizzed about how much was invested to set up the location at 2 Rennie Street, next to the Jamaica National Building.
