Payless eyes February opening in Jamaica
Payless Shoesource says it will open at least three stores in Jamaica next February in what it describes as an expansion of its retail outlets internationally.
“We will grand open three to four stores in February,” the popular American chain said in an e-mailed response to Business Observer questions.
“Payless is expanding its retail stores internationally,” the company added. “Jamaica, like many new markets for Payless, is well aligned with what Payless has to offer — great footwear and accessory fashion at a great value. We are dedicated to democratising the latest fashion, designs and ideas in footwear and accessories for all to enjoy. That means making the latest looks available at a great price.”
Last week, the Business Observer reported that representatives of the chain are in the island recruiting staff with the help of a local company. They are also being assisted by Jampro.
The company declined to state at this time the size of its investment, however, one local business analyst suggested that it was unlikely to top $30 million.
The Business Observer also learnt that the investment is being made by the Trinidadian holders of the Payless franchise in that Caribbean country.
Efforts by the Business Observer to determine where the stores would be located were unsuccessful. However, last week a Jamaican who was contacted about interviewing for a job said she was told that the company intended to open at least two stores in Kingston and another probably in Montego Bay or Negril.
On its website, Payless lists Airwalk, Dexter, Champion, American Eagle by Payless, Zoe&Zac, as well as designer labels Lela Rose for Payless, Christian Siriano for Payless and Isabel Toledo for Payless, as among the popular brands it sells.
