2010… a mixed bag in entertainment
The local entertainment scene proved to be to be a reflection of the economy — a real roller coaster ride.
Being Jamaica, music led the way although very few acts were able to make any headway on international charts and markets.
Gyptian was the standard bearer for Reggae and Dancehall during 2010. His track Hold You, raced up Billboard and he was able to close out the year with a couple of international awards, albeit missing out on a Grammy nomination for his acclaimed album Hold You.
One bright spark locally was our film industry. After a drought spanning years, there were two Jamaicans films – Storm Saulter’s Better Mus’ Come and the documentary, RiseUp. Both received critical acclaim and highlighted the stories which abound in the Jamaica society.
This year also saw the end of an era as a number of artistes and cultural aicons made their transition.
Splash’s retrospective on entertainment in 2010 will wrap next Friday.
